When I started getting more work in the industry, I was a bit confused with other makeup artists' actions.
I have had Makeup Artist/Bloggers delete my comments on their blog or Beautylish account, when my comments were complimenting their makeup, or saying how pretty they are.
I have had Makeup Artists in my area deny my friend request on Facebook because they think I am going to ask them for all their tips and tricks, which I would never do!
I have had Makeup Artists ignore me when they find out I have a child.
So many reasons why these Makeup Artists don't want to talk to me and none of them seem like good enough reasons. I guess I'm the complete opposite of them because I think it's a good thing to network and befriend other people in your field because although you may see it as competition, there is enough work for us all and you'd be surprised at how many makeup artists refer you when they are not available, or need a team of artists for big events. They won't be calling you if you ignored them now would they? Plus, another makeup artist is the only other person I can talk to about makeup for hours without them getting bored!
From the makeup artists that have befriended me, I have gotten many jobs when they were not available, and gotten to be part of jobs where more than one makeup artist was needed.
I love this quote and I think it is relevant to this topic. It is extremely import how you react to things. So if you choose to act judgmental and catty towards another makeup artist, well... don't be surprised when life doesn't give you as many opportunities.

And because I am a professional and I don't delete people out of anger, I still get updates via Facebook or Twitter from the people who ignored or denied me and it's sad when I actually see them posting they are getting ZERO work! (I really have seen this, no lie) Maybe they should change their attitude. Send out positive energy into the world and positive things will come back to you.

good post! i agree :-)
ReplyDeleteIf I was a (legit) makeup artist I'd be like you, trying to network like crazy. But to each either own I guess. I love that quote by the way!
ReplyDeleteYes, to each their own, but we see where the negative leads people ;)
ReplyDeleteYou are very sweet & I totally agree :)
ReplyDeleteYou are my inspiration. Hope you know that!
You are so sweet Kacer! How did you like the giveaway stuff?
ReplyDeleteAmen!! It is such a shame that there is so much cattiness in this industry when what people really should be doing is coming together to NETWORK! Oh well, their loss! :P
ReplyDeleteExactly!
ReplyDeleteYou're a smart girl keep doing what you're doing. I'm sure you're going to get very far!
ReplyDelete-Adriana :)
Thanks Adriana
ReplyDeleteReally great post! I'm hoping to become a freelance makeup artist and love that i'm able to meet fellow MUAl I can't believe there are others who will just ignore you.. =\
ReplyDeleteGirl, you don't know. And keep having a baby to yourself until AFTER getting the job or meeting the person.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about makeup and hair people taking care of each other! Clients, actors, models, directors etc will come and go but we need to stick together. There are plenty of good people out there. Focus on them.
ReplyDeleteThank Kim, I totally agree! I've learned to ignore the others and have made good friends with makeup & hair people
ReplyDeleteI was just speaking about this at a class I took on Sunday! Everyone wants to give these mua's excuses like oh their too busy to befriend ppl on fb, or they are doing this and that! No they are not! They have to sign in and see you've sent them a request! I've gone through the same thing and it is a bit discouraging but keep doing what your doing! I've just told myself that they will see me again and I may be at a shoot or in their presence at some point and time! Keep up the great work your doing!!
ReplyDeleteOmg I know, the real reason is some people are competitive which is fine but you don't have to share you're secrets ifyou don't want. It's just being friendly & supporting one another. I've heard someone say it's probably because they get jealous at seeing other MUA work but for me it's motivation. But it's okay, I will never stop being friendly or positive!
